About Burton Leander Rowing Club

Burton Leander Rowing Club is the premiere rowing club in Burton on Trent and celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 1997. The club has seen successes at national and international level, with wins at Henley, The National Championships and The National Schools Regatta. Members of the junior squad regularly attend GB trials, the most recent selection was Liam Rose who competed in the GB vs France Regatta in Abbevile sur la Somme, France.

We are fortunate to have approximately 6KM of row able river, with an exciting regatta course, over 1100m from the Leicester Line Railway Bridge to a point just before the Ferry Bridge, and a straight sprint course over 450m. Burton Leander aims to enable its athletes to meet their aspirations through the provision of excellent training facilities both on and off the water, this includes Olympic weights facilities, Concept 2 rowing machines and quality coaching alongside a full fleet of racing boats.

British & European Indoor Championships

Five Burton rowers represented the Leander club at the recent British and European indoor rowing championships. The British championships were relocated at Nottingham University this year after talking place at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham for the best part of two decades. This was the first time that Britain has hosted the European championships so continental as well as national honours were at stake.

English indoor silver medallist Ken Moore stamped his name in the club’s illustrious history by snatching an unexpected but brilliant bronze medal in the vet 65-69 heavyweight category, recording a fine 7m16.6s for the 2km event. Despite fading over the last 200 metres, remarkably Moore finished second Brit behind Roger Stainforth of Durham, with runaway winner Christian Sommer from Team Germany taking the gold (6m59.8s). An elated Moore said, “With the indoor season now over, the emphasis will be to work towards the summer season and the British Masters National championships and Henley Masters regatta”.

Leicester Regatta

If a broken blade, a crab and a boat stranded in weeds proved the old adage that bad luck comes in threes, by the end of the Leicester Regatta, Burrton Leander Rowing went home with four good reasons to celebrate.

In the J16 single Ryan Ganley built up a seemingly unassailable lead and at one point was some 8 lengths clear of his Nottingham rival. Inexplicably the talented youngster suffered the proverbial ‘Devon Loch’ moment in unwittingly steering into some weeds and undergrowth to allow his rival to canter home for the victory. A similar fate awaited John Pinchbeck in the Novice singles.

Pubs and Clubs Regatta

Steve King Sports took the win in the inaugural Burton Leander Pubs and Clubs regatta and after a tough group stage where all competing teams played each other for points the top four crews progressed through to the semi finals.  HMS Mutton were favourites from the group stage winning all but one of their races and faced the Cripwell Crabs who they beat by 1 length.  The other semi final was made up of the Elms Devils and Steve King Sports , although hopeful after being the only team to beat HMS Mutton in the group stage the Devils lost out narrowly to Steve King Sports who then went on to take victory in the final by three quarters of a length.

Thank you to all that supported the event and hope to see you all again next year!!

The first win of the weekend came from the Novice double scull of Ed Knight and Adam Brown winning all three rounds of their event with ease and puttting all their hard work over the winter to good use, stepping up to race in intermediate 3 double sculls on Sunday their form continued but after a tough row to the line in the final they missed out on a second win by half a length.
